Second Exit delves into the vibrant colours found across the diverse landscapes of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland. This series captures the unique power of photography, as Kenton navigates the delicate balance between the present moment and an ambiguous sense of the past.
Kenton’s approach is intuitive and reflective, often featuring her husband in the compositions. While Second Exit portrays the unfamiliar outback, she finds beauty in the mundane moments of life: filling up the car, resting in a motel room, or even a towel draped on a caravan door. These overlooked details become subjects of quiet intrigue.
Rather than conforming to the traditional narratives of the Australian bush, Second Exit is free from thematic constraints. Kenton’s sole intention was to explore the medium of photography—specifically color—for the first time. This newfound experimentation naturally aligned with a 10,000 km road trip she undertook with her husband, traveling through southeastern Australia over two months.
Second Exit serves as a visual diary, intimately linked to Kenton’s first experience with the Australian interior. Her photographs reflect an unfiltered reality: sparse yet full of life, unsentimental yet deeply affectionate. Through a fixed lens, Kenton invites viewers to see the world as she encountered it—unembellished, yet rich in quiet moments of beauty.
