I've been trying to shift my mindset into a space that I'm doing the best I can. I'm working through the things in the timeline, not (being) worried about having to tick specific boxes by specific times. If you've got those boxes that you need to tick, or you're trying to achieve things too quickly, it might lead to those things not happening.’

Foster uses photography as a way of documenting and investigating his everyday surroundings. He seeks to be curious, taking time to notice and capture those things which are often overlooked or seem ordinary to most. Foster usually works outside, walking through the landscape and slowing down mentally and physically. Photography becomes an element of this process, but is not the central element. Rather, it is about taking time to engage with the world.

Oliver Foster is a photographer from Aotearoa (New Zealand) now based in Naarm (Melbourne). Foster is one of the Centre for Contemporary Photography’s Creative Residents for 2023. He studied at Massey University, Wellington and graduated in 2020 with First Class Honours.
